JKS Karate Chester is, obviously, a Karate Club based in Chester. We currently operate from a dojo in the suburb of Hoole. We practise a form of karate known as Shotokan that is known for its powerful yet fast style. The club was born out of a simple idea: to bring high quality, accessible and affordable karate martial arts to the entire community. Our unique approach to learning: by ensuring basic physical aptitudes are developed (such as flexibility, strength, mobility and balance); with a focus on teaching traditional Shotokan Karate skills and values (through the development of character, sincerity and self control by the application of effort), make us the obvious choice for those wanting high quality teaching.

JKS Karate Chester is affiliated to the Japan Karate Shotorenmei (JKS) Federation, a worldwide organisation with representation in over 61 countries and over 100 affiliated clubs across England. JKS World Chief Instructor is the legendary Masao Kagawa Shihan 9th Dan. Kagawa Shihan is also the World Technical Director for the World Karate Federation (WKF) – the only World Governing body recognised by the International Olympic Committee, and the JKS has played a lead role in preparing the Karate world for its inclusion in the Olympic Games in Japan 2020.

The JKS international standing, and its representation at the highest levels of world sport, mean that when you train at JKS Karate Chester you can be assured that you are learning Shotokan Karate as it is meant to be. We are committed to ensuring that students achieve the highest standards in the martial art and while this may seem a little severe, we also like to ensure that the learning environment is not only challenging but fun and enjoyable! Through our links to the JKS, our club is currently the only Shotokan Karate club in and around Chester UK with a direct affiliation to a headquarters in Japan; through this affiliation we can trace our links (from master to student) directly back to the founder of modern Shotokan Karate - Master Gichin Funakoshi.
